On May 15 local time, the online monitoring system for the tailings storage facility at the Kambove copper-cobalt mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)—operated by Kambove Mining SAS (KMS), an indirect subsidiary of China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. (CNMC)—was officially put into operation.
This marks the launch of CNMC's first smart monitoring system for a tailings storage facility in Africa, ushering in a new stage of intelligent monitoring and management in the facility's safety management. The system provides strong technological support for safe production and ecological conservation in the mining area.
With China's homegrown BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) as its technological backbone, the system integrates high-precision sensors and intelligent data analysis modules. It enables real-time collection of key operational data, such as precipitation, dam body displacement, and water levels. The data is transmitted via the Internet to a cloud-based service center.
Thanks to the system, safety management at the facility has shifted from a reactive model to a proactive and preventative approach, ensuring full-coverage safety inspections with no blind spots and zero risk oversight.
Using 3D modeling technology, the system visualizes the operational status of the facility on large monitoring screens at the facility's production scheduling and command center. This enables management personnel to remotely monitor key indicators such as displacement trends and water level fluctuations.
With the support of big data analysis, the system allows for proactive risk assessments of major safety hazards. It reduces emergency response time from the traditional "hour level" to the current "minute level", significantly improving the accuracy and timeliness of risk management.
Building on this milestone, KMS will continue to enhance technological empowerment for safe production, further improving its safety management capabilities and helping other Chinese-funded mining companies in the DRC embrace a new model of sustainable development.
